Software Engineering is the discipline that studies the building of software systems.
Anybody who can programme can write software, but not anybody who can programme can write good software. Software Engineering will teach you step by step how to write good software, more precisely, it will teach you how to think about writing software.
As a graduate you will have a thorough understanding of both the process and the underlying science of the production of software systems and will possess the engineering skills required to design and implement them.
MobiGolf is a software package which helps golf players improve their game. The package includes a mobile application and a desktop application, complemented by a web service.MobiGolf is David Richardson's final year project. He graduated in 2004 with BEng in Software Engineering and is now doing his postgraduate studies with the Laboratory for Foundations of Computer Science within the School of Informatics.
The School of Informatics covers a vast area of research in Informatics with a breadth unparalleled in the UK. Students will have the chance to embark on software engineering projects, which stem from cutting edge, unique research. For example, you could be given the task to create a modelling package for protein interactions as your fourth year project in which your software engineering skills will be applied to research in bioinformatics.
Graduates fulfil the educational requirement to become Members of the British Computer Society, which is a professional qualification carrying with it both prestige and responsibilities. To achieve the status of Engineering Council Chartered Engineer (CEng) you will have to complete a 'matching section' equivalent to an additional undergraduate year of education, which may be industry based.
'I chose Edinburgh because I believe a course emphasising theory is much more valuable than one based around current trends in technology, more so for fast paced field of computers. Having said that you also get enough practicals to grasp a firm understanding of the subject. Software Engineering helps you to undertand the major problems in large scale projects and practices to avoid them, preparing you for real world. I would recommend my course to anyone attracted to theory and the interesting problems found in the subject, and who enjoys applying what they've learnt.' Gyanendra Pandey, graduate, BEng Software Engineering.
