Flexible Study
All our degree programmes are flexible and are
structured around a simple credit system. Each course has a credit
weighting, typically 10, or 20 credits, and you must total 120 credits in
each year of study.
Flexibility at pre-Honours level
The
University of Edinburgh encourages students to broaden their horizons
by stuying a subject which is not directly related to their
degree. This is known the 'outside subject' and there are
hundreds of courses to choose from.
Most of our degrees do allow you to take an
outside subject for up to 40 credits, see for example the degree structure of the
BSc/BEng in Computer Science.
In addition to the option of studying an outside subject, students have
the possibility to move between our degrees. For example, you can
enroll for
BSc in Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering and switch to
BSc/BEng in Computer Science.
Flexibility in the Honours years
In the third and fourth year of study you will focus on the main
discipline of your degree. Studying with the School of Informatics
however means that you have
over 70 specialist courses to choose from at honours level.
