These degrees are offered jointly with the School of Engineering and Electronics.
For many years engineers have used software tools to develop the increasingly complex hardware that has become a common part of everyday life. The design of much electronic equipment is now so complex that to provide all the functionality in hardware is impractical. The solution is to design the product as an intimate mix of hardware and software components. This requires engineers who are familiar with these components and the tools needed to combine them into the solutions that will satisfy the needs of tomorrow's world.
The IT industry is short of well-qualified recruits. Graduates in Electronics and
Software Engineering are among those most highly desired by industry; the breadth of
study and experience involved in this degree make its graduates enormously
employable.
For details of degree structure and content see degree programme specification for BEng and for MEng.
BEng raduates fulfil the educational requirement to become Members of the British Computer Society, which is a professional qualification carrying with it both prestige and responsibilities. To achieve the status of Engineering Council Chartered Engineer (CEng) students will have to complete a 'matching section' equivalent to an additional undergraduate year of education, which may be industry based. The MEng carries full CEng accreditation.
