Entry Requirements
Typical entry requirements for degrees in the School of Informatics are:
- BBBB or ABBC at SQA Higher, or more if two sittings.
- Qualifications must include Maths at grade B. Sixth-year work in Maths is recommended.
- ABB or AAC at GCE A-level, or more if two sittings.
- Qualifications must include Maths A-level at grade B or Maths AS-level at grade A.
Maths at A-level or Higher is required for admission to Combined Honours in AI and Psychology.
- Overseas Applicants
- A large number of European and international qualifications are
also accepted. These include the International Baccalaureate, European
Baccalaureate or the Irish Leaving Certificate, as well as many
national qualifications. Further information.
- Mature Applicants
- For applicants aged 21 or over by 1 September in the year of entry,
entrance may be gained in a variety of ways including recent SQA
Highers or GCE A-levels, an Open Studies Credit for Entry Certificate
which is awarded by the University of Edinburgh's Office of Lifelong
Learning, Open University credits or satisfactory completion of a
validated access course.
Entry to Second Year
The School does allow direct entry to second year for all but seven of its degrees.
Second-year entry requirements are:
- AA at SQA Advanced Higher, including Maths, plus Highers at AB in
two other subjects. Computing at Higher grade B or equivalent is
required, or appropriate relevant experience in computing.
- AAA at GCE level, including Maths. Computing/ICT at AS level grade
B or equivalent is required, or appropriate relevant experience in
computing.
- International Baccalaureate: 36 points overall and award of IB Diploma including Maths at HL Grade 6.
- European Baccalaureate: 80% overall and award of EB Diploma including Maths at 8/10.
The joint degree Computer Science and Physics (GF43) has the same
second-year entry requirements as above but note that both Maths and
Physics qualifications are required:
- AA at SQA Advanced Higher, including Maths and Physics, plus Highers at AB in two other subjects. Computing at Higher grade B
or equivalent is required, or appropriate relevant experience in
computing.
- AAA at GCE level, including Maths and Physics. Computing/ICT at AS level grade B or equivalent is required, or appropriate relevant experience in computing.
- International Baccalaureate: 36 points overall and award of IB Diploma including Maths and Physics at HL Grade 6.
- European Baccalaureate: 80% overall and award of EB Diploma including Maths and Physics at 8/10.
Exceptions
Second-year entry is never allowed for the following degrees:
- Artificial Intelligence and Philosophy (GV75)
- Artificial Intelligence and Psychology (GC68)
- Cognitive Science (C850)
- Computational Linguistics (QG14)
- Computer Science and Management Science (GN42)
- Computer Science and Philosophy (GV45)
- Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence (QG17)
