This degree is offered jointly with the School of Engineering and Electronics.
All computers consist of electronic hardware capable of running computer programs
or software. Advances in computing have been possible because of developments in
electronics and developments in software. This degree is designed to train graduates
who will have a unique blend of skills in both hardware and software. Such graduates
are in much demand by employers because of their breadth of knowledge and skills.
They will have an unusually wide range of career options open to them, being
qualified to work in software development, hardware development or both.
For details of degree structure and content see degree programme specification for BEng and for MEng.
The Edinburgh degree is taught by two of the best departments in the country. Our joint degrees are highly flexible in structure and allow students a great deal of choice, particularly in the latter years of the course.
BEng graduates fulfil the educational requirement to become Members of the British Computer Society, which is a professional qualification carrying with it both prestige and responsibilities. To achieve the status of Engineering Council Chartered Engineer (CEng) students will have to complete a 'matching section' equivalent to an additional undergraduate year of education, which may be industrial based. The MEng carries full CEng accreditation.
