Hc1 2007--2008: Assessed Assignment 3
Dialogue and Philosophy of Communication

Issued: Thursday 28 February.
Deadline: 4pm, Thursday 13 March.

Do all of the following tasks.

1A.
If we couldn't accommodate presuppositions, then just like (i), (ii) would be odd, unless there was a preceding discourse context like (iii) that introduces a King of France.
(i)
?He is bald.
(ii)
The King of France is bald.
(iii)
There is something (or someone) called France.
There is a King of France.
The King of France is bald.

Imagine a world where you couldn't accommodate presuppositions. Then what sentences would you have to precede the following with, in order to make them acceptable:

(a)
John didn't stop beating his wife.
(b)
John regretted that he didn't stop beating his wife.
(c)
Alex forgot to lock her Alfa Spider again.

1B.
Look at the grammar shown in the appendix of your course notes. Summarise the motivation for:
i.
Having an instruction box
ii.
Allowing two different kinds of instruction.

2.
``Euler's circles are a way of calculating syllogisms, but because diagrams are concrete, the simple version sometimes needs a large number of diagrams.'' Explain this statement with an example, and show how the `cross' notation overcomes the problem.
