Research Quality
In the UK, the higher education funding bodies carry out a
Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) to enable them to distribute public funds for research, selectively, on
the basis of quality.
The last RAE exercise was held in 2001 and the University of Edinburgh was the only university in the UK awarded the top 5*A rating for Computer Science. View the results on-line, by unit of assessment and by institution.
Biggest and Best
This makes us the UK's top-ranking department.
With 87.1 research active staff submitted for assessment, we are also
the UK's biggest research group in this area. In Computer Science, the
University of Edinburgh is responsible for 31% of the UK's top-rated 5*
research, and two thirds of Scotland's internationally leading 5/5*
research.
About the RAE
The main purpose of the Research Assessment
Exercise (RAE) is to enable the higher education funding bodies to
distribute public funds for research selectively on the basis of
quality. Institutions conducting the best research receive a larger
proportion of the available grant so that the infrastructure for the
top level of research in the UK is protected and developed. The RAE
assesses the quality of research in universities and colleges in the
UK.
Next RAE
The
next RAE is scheduled for 2008.
